Cougars' Late Rally Falls Short
Despite an inspired 4-run rally in the sixth inning, the Cougars fell 6-4 to Nashua Catholic. "We played a strong team today," commented Coach Blaisdell, "and perhaps learned a lesson about not giving away runs early against tough opponents. Once again, however, I liked the way we rallied both offensively and defensively in the latter innings." With three runs in the first and third innings, Nashua Catholic built a six run lead while the Cougars threatened in both the second and fourth innings, but couldn't seem to get the timely hit. That pattern all changed in the sixth when pitcher and co-captain Mitch Regan led off with a walk and subsequent steal of second. 2B/P Zach Martin drew another walk and when SS/P Alex Comire singled the Cougars found themselves in another bases loaded situation. Co-captain catcher Brendan Mulcahy wasted little time clearing the bases, however, as he rocketed a line drive over the left fielder's head on the first pitch of the at bat. Mulcahy then scored the fourth Cougar run on a sharp line drive single by 3B Owen Clemans. 1B Alex Drake followed with another single before the rally sizzled leaving the Cougars only two runs down. Nashua Catholic countered with their closer in the 7th, however, to earn a hard-fought victory. Added Coach Brandt, "Another tidy game from our mound men today. Mitch, Zach, and Alex pounded the strike zone again, giving us a chance to win this one. That's all a team can ask of their hurlers." Next up will be the Cougars' first home game on Friday against Chester - that is, if it doesn't rain!
