Derryfield Welcomes New Faculty
Harry Burnham ‘11 - Math (Algebra 1, Geometry, Crew Coach) Harry is a Derryfield alum who has kept in touch over the years. He graduated from University of St. Andrews in Scotland and has been teaching math and Latin at the Cardigan Mt. School for the past two years, as well as teaching in their summer program since 2014. Harry rowed crew at Derryfield and St. Andrews, and coached the sport in the UK and for the Lake Sunapee Rowing Club.
Melanie Hawthorne - Spanish (Level 1-3) Melanie has both a BA in Spanish and an MEd from the University of New Hampshire in Durham. She has been teaching Spanish at Kennett High School in North Conway since 2015. She brings to us great experience with project-based learning and performance-based assessments. Melanie has also been a camp counselor for the past seven years at Camp Wicosuta in Hebron, NH.
Jodie Leen - English (6th & 7th grades, MS Academic Support) Jodie has been teaching at Hampstead Academy since 1993 and is loved by a number of her former students, currently at Derryfield. At Hampstead she has taught English as well as serving as a reading specialist and wearing many hats like HCA, and NEASC committee chair. Jodie has an MEd from Notre Dame College in Manchester and a BS from the University of Maine in Orono.
Taylor Moon - Science (Biology & 6th grade) Taylor is completing her PhD in Immunology at the University of Rochester. She is a 2012 graduate of St. Lawrence University with a BS in Biology. In addition to completing her PhD, Taylor taught Biology to high school students in the University’s summer Pre-College program, designing and instructing her own courses with guidance from program staff. Taylor is an equestrian and figure skater and is eager to contribute wherever she can at Derryfield.
Dana Shih - Chinese (Level 3&4) Dana began her teaching career in Taiwan in 2005 and has been teaching Mandarin in the United States since 2015. She currently teaches in the Bedford School District during the school week and the Lexington Chinese School on Sundays. She will be teaching two sections of Chinese for us next year and continuing her roles in Bedford and Lexington.
Ryan Tanner-Read - History (US History, Mock Trial) Ryan comes to us from Oldfields School in Maryland where he has been teaching History and Government since 2014. He has a PhD in American History from the college of William and Mary as well as a BA in History and Literature from American University. Ryan has experience integrating technology and social media in the classroom to promote interactive learning projects. He will be teaching a range of history classes and workig with our Mock Trial team.
Jim Watt - Math (Calculus, Statistics, Investment Math, Co-Chair of Math) Jim has been teaching Math, Economics, and investment courses at independent schools since 1999. Most recently he has been at St. Paul’s where he was also the Head Varsity soccer coach. Jim is an innovative teacher who works hard to connect high level abstract math to real world applications. In addition to his teaching Jim will work with Tracy Blaisdell as Co-Math Department Chair and will step in as the Head Coach of the girls varsity soccer program.
