Art Honors Abound

Duffy Smiley
The creative arts are thriving at Derryfield! The extraordinary depth of student talent in the department was most recently reflected in the results of this year’s New Hampshire Scholastic Art Awards, in which 15 Derryfield students had a total of 35 winning pieces receive recognition. This is the highest number of honors received in the recent history, a number that has been on an upward trajectory since Becky Barsi joined the department as chair three years ago (30 awards in 2017, 8 awards in 2016).

According to Ms. Barsi, “The Scholastic Art Awards is a very competitive juried art competition for students grades 7-12... think of it as the championships of visual art.” This year, Derryfield submitted a total of 72 individual pieces from 22 upper school students. Their work was considered next to the artwork of hundreds of student artists from all over the state of New Hampshire. Work earning Gold Key honors will now go on to be considered for scholarships and national awards. Winners at the national level have their work presented in New York City at this year's annual Scholastic Art Award Celebration at Carnegie Hall.

The artwork of students from Derryfield and all around New Hampshire will be on display at the Pinkerton Academy Theatre from January 16 - February 4. An award ceremony will recognize the student accomplishments on February 4 from 12:00- 2:00 p.m. To learn more about the National Scholastic Art Awards and past winners like Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, and Zac Posen, please visit artandwriting.org.

Please join us in celebrating the hard work and talent of these student artists.
