Wagner '19 Earns All-American Honors

As Derryfield swim coach Jon Steer ’72 related to the community during a morning assembly, “Swimming is a lonely sport. You start out very young ‘following the black stripe,’ as we call it. There are a lot of mornings; there are a lot of tough practices. The pinnacle of the sport is to become an Olympian, but along the way there are markers that say that great things are going to happen for an individual.”

One of our swimmers has received an impressive honor based on her performance following the black stripe. To be named a NISCA High School All-American is a big thing in swimming and a very difficult award to come by; it means that you are in the top 100 swimmers in the country. Derryfield junior Lindsay Wagner has achieved just that in the 100 Yard backstroke, with her time of 0:55.44 landing her in 80th place in the country. In the last 20 years, there have been fewer than ten New Hampshire athletes to receive All-American honors, and about half of those became Olympians.

Lindsey was part of the four-member Derryfield girls’ varsity swim team that won and set state records for both the 200 yard medley relay and the 400 yard freestyle relay, leading to a tie for first-place team at the Div-II State Championships last February. We look forward to seeing her break more records in the pool this winter.
