Wrapping It Up

What a terrific end of the year! With the weather holding off for our annual trip to Canobie and our end-of-the year picnic, it seems we got rewarded for all the good karma we created this year. For some parents (like Tracy and me), the year culminated in the Eighth Grade Send-off celebration. We like to keep the details of this gathering a surprise, but, suffice it to say, it highlights the relationships enjoyed between faculty and students and between the students themselves. It is really a special night, and our middle school Class of 2012 certainly deserved the recognition. I also would like to recognize and thank Shannon McGinley and Lara Shilling for all their work organizing a snack for the evening. Personally, this was a significant year for the Blaisdells as we graduated an eighth grader and a senior from Derryfield. Our pride is matched only by the gratitude we feel for the passionate, committed faculty who have changed their lives in so many ways. As I cleaned out my office this week to prepare for Breakthrough Manchester, a picture of my oldest child, Sarah, dressed up as Medusa in sixth grade became juxtaposed with her head shot from this year's musical. I could not help but to think of all the time in between these two pictures and how I simply could not imagine a better group of people to help her and challenge her through her journey.

I will be taking some time off until July. Then I am in for most of the remaining summer. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or just want to come in for a chat. As is my custom, I have a stack of summer reading I have accumulated of which I am excited to begin. These books run the gamut - reflective of my interests, I imagine! There are also some titles I may send to you all that I think might be great shared reading. In return, I invite you to send me some titles, as well. You can respond to this blog so that we can all see them!

Finally, if my experience informs me correctly, your children should have had enough "down time" to re-charge their batteries. It is time now to get them up and going! Please see my posted notes from the last MS Communications Meeting that include suggestions for a productive summer.

Enjoy yourselves and your family!

I heartily recommend Quiet: The Power of Introverts In a World That Can't Stop Talking, by Susan Cain. I found it to be a highly insightful reflection on temperament, leadership, and acceptance of differences. It also provides some practical advice on working with your own natural bent--or supporting yourself well if you need to work against it. I enjoyed it and think you would too. Have a great summer!
