Carla Nyquist will graduate this June as one of Derryfield's most successful alpine skiers both on and off the race course. She distinguished herself within the Derryfield community as the 2012 winner of the Scozzafava Head of School Award and the Scholar Athlete award, as well as the Class of 1970 Award and the Dartmouth Book Award. She has been an extremely accomplished student, diving into her studies to receive Highest or High Honors almost every trimester, and travelling both junior and senior years on Habitat for Humanity trips. She will attend Colby College in Waterville, ME in the fall.

As a six-year varsity ski team member and one of the top alpine ski racers in the state, she distinguished herself most recently as one of the top ten finalists for the Union Leader Athlete of the Month for February 2012, after winning the same award in January 2010. She was captain of the girls' alpine team her junior and senior years, and as a senior, was instrumental in helping the NH state team finish first at Easterns, the top race of the season, beating out teams from the rest of New England, the mid-Atlantic and Wisconsin. She qualified for the elite NH State Team to ski the Easterns in every year of high school, but didn't ski with them for two of those years, choosing alpine Junior Olympics and a Habitat for Humanity project instead.

However, as Derryfield faculty member Steve Mathes explains, despite all these accomplishments, she remains humble about her successes. “She is a private person who does things for their own sake, not in search of praise from others,” he remarked.
